Best hair salon software in Ireland: 6 compared

In Ireland, most salon booking software costs between €0 and €50 a month excluding VAT: Square has a free plan, Fresha charges €14.95 for one person or €9.95 per team member, Booksy €44 plus €5 per extra user, and Phorest quotes only on a call (Square, Booksy and Phorest re-read on their Irish pages on 1 October 2026; Fresha on 25 September 2026, on the euro list it served us). The subscription is rarely the biggest line: card fees, new-client fees and add-ons decide the bill, so compare those first to find the best hair salon software.

Tuesday, 9.40pm. A client texts to move Saturday's colour to Friday, and the diary that knows whether Friday is free is lying on the counter of a locked salon. You answer 'I'll confirm in the morning', and by the morning she has booked somewhere that answered at 9.41.

Booking software fixes that for a few euro a week. The hard part is choosing, because most comparisons that rank are written for the UK or the US and quote pounds or dollars. Below are six tools used by Irish salons, with the prices each one publishes for Ireland, the fees that sit under the headline price, and the maths for a three-chair salon.

Key takeaways

  1. The range. €0 (Square Free) to €49 a month (Square Premium) for most published plans, excl. VAT. Fresha charges €9.95 per team member, Booksy €44 plus €5 per extra user, Traxo €40 to €80, and Phorest only quotes on a call.
  2. The fees matter more than the subscription. Online card fees run from 1.29% + €0.15 to 3% per payment, and a marketplace can charge a one-time fee on each new client it sends you.
  3. Marketplace or your own page. Fresha and Booksy list you in an app next to other salons. Square, Timely, Phorest and Traxo send clients to a page that shows only you.
  4. Our verdict. A solo stylist on a budget: Square Free or Fresha. A team that wants new faces: Booksy. A busy multi-room salon: an all-in-one suite such as Phorest. Your own website with the booking built in: Traxo, which is not the cheapest line in the table.

What should salon booking software do?

Every tool below takes online bookings. What separates a hair salon booking system that saves you an hour a day from one that creates work is a short list of details. Check each one on the trial, not on the brochure:

  1. Real service lengths. A root touch-up and a full head of foils can't share a 30-minute grid. Each service needs its own length, and ideally processing time the stylist can use for someone else.
  2. One calendar per stylist. Clients pick their stylist, and each stylist has their own hours and days off. On some tools that is included, on others it is priced per person.
  3. Deposits at booking. The single most effective cure for no-shows. Check whether it is on the plan you are looking at: on Square it starts with Plus.
  4. Reminders, and who pays for them. A reminder the day before is standard. Texts are often counted: Fresha includes 20 a month per team member, then charges €0.10 each.
  5. Client records you can export. Colour formulas, allergies, visit history. Ask on day one how you get them out on the day you leave.
  6. Where the booking page lives. In a marketplace app, on the vendor's page, or on your own website. It decides who the client sees next to you.

Stock, payroll, consultation forms and SMS campaigns are useful in a salon of eight. In a salon of two, they are menus you pay for and never open.

Opening a new salon rather than switching tools? Booking comes after the registrations; our checklist for opening a hair salon in Ireland puts the CRO, Revenue and HSA steps in order.

How it works at Traxo

Your own website, with the booking built in. Your services and their real lengths, one calendar per stylist on Pro, payment at booking, in full or as a deposit, if you want it, a reminder the day before, and the appointment in the Google, Apple or Outlook calendar you already use. Clients book on a page that shows only your salon. How online booking works.

Is free salon booking software really free?

Free plans exist, and for a stylist starting out they are a sensible first step. They make their money in three other places:

  1. On payments. Square Free costs €0 a month, and every online payment costs 1.4% + 25c + VAT on an EEA card. That is fair; it is also a subscription paid in small pieces.
  2. On features held back. On Square, no-show protection and booking confirmations start with Plus at €19 a month. Most salons want both within a month.
  3. On new clients. Fresha has no free plan any more, but its marketplace model is the one people mean by 'free': the euro list we were served shows the new-client line as 'Free' on 25 September 2026, but Fresha sets it country by country, so check the one it shows you. Fresha's own rules say it applies even when that client books on your website, if they saw your marketplace profile first.

Offering a free plan is not the same as free. And you may even save money by going with a paid subscription from start.

John Hallberg, beauty marketing writer, The Salon Business, 'Best free salon booking system', 17 March 2025

He writes for a paid alternative, so weigh it accordingly. The test is simple anyway: add up a normal month of payments and new clients on the free plan, then compare it with the paid ones. The worked example below does exactly that.

What does booking software cost a three-chair salon? A worked example

Hypotheses, to replace with your own: a salon in Kilkenny with three stylists, each bookable online; 120 bookings a month take a €10 deposit online, so €1,200 goes through the software; reminders go by email, so no text charges. Per month, excluding VAT:

  1. Fresha Team: 3 × €9.95 = €29.85; deposits 120 × (€10 × 1.29% + €0.15) = 120 × €0.279 = €33.48. Total €63.33.
  2. Square Plus: €19; deposits 120 × (€10 × 1.4% + €0.25) = 120 × €0.39 = €46.80. Total €65.80.
  3. Booksy: €44 + 2 × €5 = €54; deposits 2.6% × €1,200 = €31.20. Total €85.20.
  4. Traxo Pro, yearly: three people need Pro, so €80; deposits 3% × €1,200 = €36. Total €116, or €136 on monthly billing.

Over a year that is €759.96 for Fresha, €789.60 for Square, €1,022.40 for Booksy and €1,392 for Traxo. On a diary alone, Traxo is the dearest of the four, and we won't dress that up.

Two lines change the order:

  1. New clients from a marketplace. The euro list shows Fresha's new-client fee as 'Free'. If the list served to you charges one and the marketplace brings 6 new clients a month at €60, each percentage point adds €3.60 a month; from about 15%, Fresha's month passes Traxo's €116.
  2. A website. Traxo's price includes your own website. On Fresha, the Smart Website add-on is €13.95 a month; Booksy and Square leave a site on your own domain to you, and a website in Ireland costs anything from a builder subscription to an agency quote.

Phorest and Timely are left out of the sums: one publishes no price, the other bills weekly in pounds according to your number of bookings. Ask both for a written quote on these same hypotheses and put it in the same list.

Your own booking page

Marketplace or your own booking page: who keeps the client?

This is the choice under all the others. A marketplace (Fresha, Booksy) lists you in an app where people browse salons near them. That is how a new salon with no following gets its first clients, and in Ireland Booksy charges nothing per new client for it.

The cost is the neighbourhood. Your regular opens the app to rebook and sees three other salons with an offer on the way to your name. Fresha goes further: taking online bookings through Fresha at all requires a marketplace listing, and unlisting switches off your online booking.

A booking page of your own (Square, Timely, Phorest, Traxo) shows only you. It brings no strangers; Google, Instagram and your window do that. For a salon whose book is already two-thirds regulars, that is usually the better trade. A marketplace is a shop window on a busy street, shared with every salon in town.

Is all-in-one beauty salon software worth it?

Phorest is the example Irish salons know best of beauty salon software that does everything: booking with unlimited staff, SMS and email campaigns, review requests after each visit, and an account manager to help you use it. Its users are its best advocates, including solo ones:

Like me, if you are a one woman show having the Phorest software is like having another person in the office.

Mary Browne, The Holistic Lodge (now retired), Trustpilot Ireland, review, 4 August 2025

We absolutely couldn’t run the salon without Phorest software. It’s so much more than a booking system and when we realised this and used more of the features, the business exploded.

Linda, salon owner, Trustpilot Ireland, review, 25 November 2025

Note the condition in Linda's sentence: the value came when they used more of the features. A suite pays off when someone in the salon runs the campaigns, reads the reports and keeps on top of the stock. If that person is you, between clients, a simpler tool you actually use beats a complete one you half use.

Our rule of thumb: if you have five or more stylists, several rooms, retail on the shelves and a manager at the desk, get quotes from the suites. Fewer chairs and your own name above the door? A booking tool with deposits is enough.

What Traxo does, and what it doesn't

Traxo gives a salon its own website with online booking, payment in full or as a deposit, and a record for each client. Pro adds a calendar and an account for each person, up to six, a loyalty programme and a Google Maps listing that updates itself. Plans are on our pricing page, and our salon booking software for hairdressers has its own page.

What it doesn't do: there is no marketplace, so nobody browsing an app will find you. There is no card terminal or till for the counter, no stock management, no payroll and no SMS marketing campaigns. The service record book is announced, not yet available. And for a team that only needs a diary, Fresha or Square cost less, as the example above shows.

Frequently asked questions

Is there free salon booking software?

Yes: Square Appointments has a free plan for a single location, with card fees on each payment. No-show protection and confirmations need the €19 Plus plan. Fresha's cheapest plan is €14.95 a month.

What is the best booking software for a hair salon?

The one that handles your real service lengths, takes a deposit at booking and gives each stylist a calendar. Beyond that, pick by where you want clients to book: in a marketplace app, or on a page that shows only you.

Can I switch booking software without losing my clients?

Yes, if you export your client list and future appointments first, and import them before you switch on online booking. Keep both systems running for a week, so nobody books a slot the new one doesn't know about.

Do I need a card terminal as well?

Only for payments at the chair. Deposits and prepayments are taken online by the booking software; Fresha, Square and Timely also sell terminals, while Traxo takes payments online only.

Who owns my client data?

You are responsible for it under GDPR, whichever tool holds it. Before you sign, ask where the data is stored and how you export it, and check the answer during the trial rather than on the day you leave. With Traxo, if you cancel, your client records are returned to you on request within 30 days, then deleted.

Your salon's own booking page, on one flat price.

Your services, stylists and online payments, bookable day and night on a page that shows only you. From €40 a month excl. VAT on the yearly plan, or €50 monthly with no commitment, and 3% per online payment.
